Chipping
Norton in the Oxfordshire
Cotswolds
Welcome to the Chipping
Norton web site which contains details on Chipping Norton accommodation
(Chipping Norton hotel and bed and breakfast information), attractions
in the Chipping Norton area and other information on this Cotswold town.
The bustling town of Chipping Norton lies eleven miles north of Burford in one of the least explored and most scenic corners of the Cotswolds.
 |
|
The western
approach to Chipping Norton is dominated by the extraordinary Bliss
Mill (pictured).
Bliss Tweed Mill is one of the crop of monuments
dating from the boom of the textile trade. |

Wealthy wool
merchants also paid for St Mary's Parish Church which can be found
in Church Street. One of the most impressive churches in the Cotswolds,
it houses some well-preserved brasses and tombs.
There is no
mention of a church in the town called 'Nortone' in the Domesday
Survey and it is thought to have been originally founded in the
12th century and dedicated to St. Nicholas, the present dedication
to St. Mary probably took place in the 13th century.

Signs of a 12th century arch are revealed on the internal wall of the tower at the west end of the Nave. An indication of the earliest church which probably only consisted of a nave and small chancel. This would have been extended in the 13th century, with aisles being added in the early 14th century.
The Cotswolds in an
area of outstanding natural beauty of England and is much visited by tourists
from home and abroad. Its Cotswold stone buildings, low density of population
and history make it a place that you will want to visit again and again.
